Notes From The Pastor’s Pen – November 22, 2015

Thanksgiving is here again and I imagine that most of us have different traditions that we do each year for the holiday. One that many do, even though it is not a holy day of obligation or even a holy day, is come to celebrate Mass together. We even have special prayers that we use at Mass on Thanksgiving that I thought might help us in how we approach the holiday. The Opening Prayer, or Collect for Mass is as follows:

Father all-powerful,
Your gifts of love are countless
and Your goodness infinite;
as we come before You on Thanksgiving Day
with gratitude for Your kindness,
open our hearts to have concern
for every man, woman, and child,
so that we may share Your gifts in loving service.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
who lives and reigns with You
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen

The prayer recognizes that God is all powerful and good, and all the gifts He gives us are out of love. Our appropriate response to those gifts and that love should be a concern for all those around us and a desire to share those gifts with them.

Not too complicated really, and I think it states what most of us know and understand, but having the reminder now and then and setting apart a day or a period to remind us of it doesn’t hurt. May you and your families have a blessed Thanksgiving and your traditions be a reminder of God’s loving gifts and an
encouragement to share them.

Fr. Nick
